Someone messages me about split dye roughly once a day and I always ask the same first question, which is what colour your hair is right now. Because that answer decides everything and almost nobody wants to hear it.
The dye isn't what hurts
Semi-permanent colour — the fun stuff, the pinks and blues and greens — is close to harmless. It sits on the hair, it fades out, it does very little structurally. If that were the whole process, split dye would be a weekend hobby with no downside.
The damage is the bleach that has to happen first. Bright colour only reads properly on a very light base, so half your head has to be lifted to something close to pale yellow before anything goes on it. Bleach works by opening the cuticle and stripping pigment out, and that is a permanent change to the structure of the hair. You can condition it. You can't undo it.
How far you're going depends entirely on where you start
Naturally light hair might get there in one session. Dark brown or black hair will not, and anyone who tells you otherwise is either inexperienced or willing to let it break. Going from black to platinum is a multi-session process spread over weeks, and each session has to be followed by recovery time.
Box-dyed black is worse again, and previously box-dyed anything is unpredictable in a way that makes professionals nervous — they can't know what's in there, so they can't know how it'll lift.
The good sign in a stylist is being told no, or being told not yet. Someone who books you in for a full transformation this Saturday without asking about your history is telling you they don't mind what happens.
What actually helps afterwards
Bond builders are the one product category genuinely worth the money on bleached hair — they work on the internal bonds rather than coating the outside. Use them as directed, not as a conditioner.
Cold water, always. Heat opens the cuticle and every wash in hot water pulls colour out and roughs up the surface further.
Wash less. This is the free one and the one nobody does. Bleached hair does not need washing as often as you think, and every wash costs you vibrancy.
Colour-depositing conditioner in your shade, every second or third wash, keeps the colour alive without a full re-dye. This is how people keep bright colour looking fresh for months. It's not a secret formula, it's just consistency.
The honest trade-off
You are exchanging some of your hair's strength for a look. That's a completely reasonable trade and I've made it repeatedly. What isn't reasonable is making it without knowing that's what it is, and then being blindsided when heat styling starts breaking pieces off.
If you're not ready for that, clip-in colour and wigs have gotten extremely good and cost you nothing structurally. There is no purity test here. Half the split dye you admire online is a wig anyway.
Know what you're spending before you spend it. Then spend it, if you want to. It looks incredible and I'd do it again.
